Under five malnourished children on the rise in Chali

November 22:
The number of malnourished children under the age of five in Chali Geog under Monggar has almost doubled in just one year. Last year, there were only 18 undernourished children in the Geog. This year, there are 35.

People from Chali Geog are economically better off than the other Geogs in Monggar. But why are many children malnourished in the Geog. And more importantly why has the number almost doubled in just one year.

The Basic Health Worker said it could be because parents are having less time for their children as they spend more time in the fields. He added that poor sanitation and cleanliness could also be blamed.

Dechen Pemo’s three-year-old son is one of the undernourished children in the Geog. She said initially she was worried. But after following the advice of the health workers her son’s weight has slightly improved.

There are 167 under five children in the Geog.
