UN commits US$ 2.175 million


March 20:
UN agencies in Bhutan will support the Royal Government to tackle the challenges facing the country in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDG).
An agreement to this effect was signed yesterday morning.

The agreement was signed by the secretary of the GNH commission Karma Tshiteem and the representatives of the UN agencies.

The project amounting to US$ 2.175 million is supported through the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security funded by the Government of Japan.

It will be used to improve access to primary education for rural children, make rural schools child friendly, improve sanitation in selected schools by providing clean drinking water, latrines and fuel efficient stoves, increase the knowledge, skills, and income of rural people by providing non formal education, village skills training, establish a network of integrated community development centers, enhance the outreach of micro-finance services for rural people, and promote small businesses.
