Trashigang-Samdrup Jongkhar highway to be complete by 2013

August 25:
Works to double lane the Trashigang-Samdrup Jongkhar highway is in full swing. The road widening works started early this month with formation cutting on the first 20 kilometers stretch from Deothang to Samdrup Jongkhar.

A Dantak official told BBS that around 15-20 heavy machines are deployed at the site. With 200-300 labourers working at the site, about 30-40 kilometers stretch is expected to be completed in a year.

Meanwhile, the ongoing widening works is expected to affect traffic flow. But once the highway is complete it will ensure a smooth traffic flow.

Our reporter Pema Samdrup says widening of the Trashigang-Samdrup Jongkhar highway is expected to help boost the economy of the six eastern Dzongkhags.

It is also expected to help the construction sector while transporting raw materials and machines.

The project is being carried out with funds from the Government of India. Works are expected to be complete by 2013.
