Thimphu Municipal Solid Waste Management Rules and Regulations comes into effect

December 1 : The Thimphu Municipal Solid Waste Management Rules and Regulations 2007 will come into effect from today.

As per the rules, If you litter in the public places like roads, sidewalks, streets, back alleys, streams, rivers then you have to pay a fine of Nu.500.

Open burning of solid waste, will attract a fine of Nu.500. For dumping large quantities of domestic industrial, or commercial waste in areas other than designated places, you will be fined Nu. 5000.

Displaying of goods on the streets will call for a fine of Nu.1000. And for illegal dumping of construction materials and soil, you will be fined Nu. 20,000.

The Thimphu Municipal Solid Waste Management Rules and Regulations 2007, these rules and regulation aim to promote sound environmental practices in solid waste management in urban areas. It also ensures efficient segregation, collection, transport, storage and safe disposal of solid waste.

Hemraj Chhetri, is the head of the Environment Division of the City Corporation. He said that without introducing these rules and regulations, it is difficult to control the disposal of the waste.

This rules and regulations will be implemented by the Thimphu City Corporation and the Royal Bhutan Police. 24 inspectors from the City Corporation will be monitoring from 9:00 am in the morning till 9:00 pm in the night.

These rules and regulations will apply only within the territorial jurisdiction of Thimphu.
