September 08: The Thimphu dzongkhag administration yesterday formally handed over 28 schools to the Thimphu City Corporation.
The handing taking ceremony was attended by the Education Secretary, the Thimphu Dzongda and the officiating Thrompen.
The 28 schools were looked after by the Thimphu dzongkhag administration. Now they will be looked after by the City Corporation. There are about 20,000 students and about 1,000 staff.
Of the 28 schools 12 are private schools falling under the Thimphu municipality area.
Speaking to BBS the officiating Thrompen, Ugyen Dorji said the schools were handed over to the City Corporation for administrative convenience.
BBS also spoke to the new Thromde Education officer, Sonam Tshering. In the past, developmental activities in the schools including infrastructure development were planned by the dzongkhag administration but when the plans are implemented, the dzongkhag has to get the clearance from the City Corporation since the schools are located in the municipality.
This caused a lot of administrative problem for the dzongkhag.
Now the developmental activities for the 28 schools will be planned and implemented by the City Corporation.
The ceremony was also attended by the officials of various sector heads of Thimphu dzongkhag.
