The demand for car soars

September 15:
The demand for vehicles has increased substantially over the last few months. Car sales agents say they are being bombarded by calls from potential customers. The rush was spurred by reports that the government is considering increasing the vehicle import tax.

The demand for vehicles is soaring following reports that the government considering increasing the import tax for vehicles.

Vehicles sales outlets like Zimdra automobiles are getting frenzied calls from potential but worried customers.

The sale of vehicles has increased and sales outlets have also been receiving frenzied calls asking them whether the import tax is likely to be increased.

In the aftermath of the report, many potential customers said it is not fair. They argue that a vehicle has become a necessity and increasing the import tax will deprive the middle class of the chance to own a family vehicle.

Kaysons automotive that is yet to launch officially has already received orders for over 80 cars over the last one month and half.

Durga automobiles said it is receiving at least three orders every day. They said the demand for cars has increased substantially. Both car sales agents based in Jaigaon, India, cater to Bhutanese customers.

The State Trading Corporation of Bhutan (STCBL) has remained unmoved. Its Managing Director, Samdrup K. Thinley said it is not going to make much of a difference. He said the highest selling vehicle is Land Cruiser Prado. The quota for Land Cruiser has been removed. This means affluent customers who dream of cruising at the wheel of a Prado will have to pay 35 percent as tax. So he said even if the tax increases, it would be nominal.

But Land Cruisers are beyond the reach of the burgeoning middle class and it is the middle class who will be affected the most if the import tax is increased. And they are ones who are placing the orders.
