August 21: Custom officials have seized tobacco products worth about Nu. 40,000 from a truck at the Phuentsholing gate.
Our reporter Tenzin Wangda says it was caught at around 5:00 pm on Tuesday, August 19 following a tip off.
The seized products include 11 sacks of chewing tobacco and boxes of cigarettes. The tobacco products were concealed under the load of bricks to be taken to Tsirang. The cigarettes were hidden in the cabin of the truck.
The 44-year-old man from Paro said that this was the first time he tried to smuggle tobacco products. He said he intended to sell it to the people and the shops along the way.
Customs officials in Phuentsholing have seized tobacco products worth nearly Nu. one million in the last three months.
