Souvenir Production and Training Centre, Punakha celebrates foundation day

May 1: The Bhutan Souvenir Production and Training Centre in Punakha celebrated its foundation day yesterday.

Her Majesty the Queen Ashi Tshering Pem Wangchuck graced the occasion. Her Majesty the Queen Ashi Tshering Pem Wangchuck is the President of Youth Development Fund.

The centre was established to give opportunities to disadvantaged young girls who could not qualify for higher studies. 38 girls have graduated from the centre so far. More than half are gainfully employed.

At the centre, the girls are taught how to make dolls, embroider and stitch. Tashi Choden a programme officer from the Youth Development Fund said the centre also promotes innovation and creativity among the students.

As part of the function, Her Majesty awarded cash prizes to the students. Currently 13 girls are undergoing skills training at the centre. Many have already decided to set up small business.

The Education Minister Lyonpo Thakur Singh Powdyel, Labour and Human Resources Minister Lyonpo Dorji Wangdi, Dzongkhag officials, and other senior government officials also attended the function.
