September 15: Shardha has won this year’s Yangphel archery tournament. The team is led by His Royal Highness Dasho Khamsum Singye Wangchuck. Sharda defeated Tob Dhen Dey and Gaden Phunsum in the finals yesterday.
Gaden Phunsum came second.
Her Royal Highness Ashi Sonam Dechan Wangchuck was the chief guest at the final match.
Tob Dhen Dey was knocked out in the 15th and the final round of the tournament but it ended in a draw between Shardha and Gaden Phunsum.
Shardha defeated Gaden Phunsum in the penalty round.
The players of the winning team Shardha received a 32 inch LCD TV, a Sony home theater with DVD and a refrigerator each. The 1st runners up team players received a laptop with a printer and a washing machine each. The 2nd runner up team players received a digital camera, a microwave oven and a music system each.
Gem Tshering from Hungyel team was declared the best archer of the year. He received a Hyundai Santro car.
The 1st runners up best archer prize of Nu. 40,000 went to Talop Namgay Wangchuk of Laya Tours and Treks. The 2nd runner up best archer was Karma Dorji of Tob Dhen Dey.
He received Nu. 10,000.
The prizes were awarded by Her Royal Highness Ashi Sonam Dechan Wangchuck.
Prizes were also being awarded for other categories including the most valuable player in the finals, highest double hits and highest bull eye hits.
His Royal Highness Dasho Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck, Royal family members, senior government officials and officials from the international community witnessed the match.
Hundreds of archery enthusiasts also gathered at the archery ground to witness the final match. Thousands of people across the country also witnessed the match live on BBS T.V.
This year a record of 150 teams took part in the tournament.
