November 4: Save the Children USA celebrated 25 years in Bhutan on November 2. To commemorate the day, students and local singers and musicians presented a cultural program which included traditional and modern dances. They also staged a street theatre performance on corruption.
The Prime Minister Lyonpo Kinzang Dorji was the guest of honour at the function.
Save the Children’s President Dr. Charles MacCormack and board members were also present during the celebration. Also present were senior government officials and heads of international agencies in Bhutan.
Speaking at the function the Prime Minister Lyonpo Kinzang Dorji said Save the Children has helped Bhutan by constructing community primary schools in remote areas, providing drinking water supplies, and initiating health and sanitation programs.
During this plan period, Save the Children is focusing on primary education and adolescent development. They supported the construction of 42 new community primary schools in 11 Dzongkhags and provided training for 280 teachers in multi-teaching skills.
The Prime Minister also awarded prizes to the winners of an essay competition organized by the save the children.
The Prime Minister and the Save the Children President also launched a documentary on Save the Children’s 25 years in Bhutan.
