September 23: The Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Athority has imposed a temporary ban on the sale of all milk based food products from China. This follows news that nearly 53,000 children have fallen ill and four have died in China after consuming milk powder conataminated with the industrial chemical melamine.
A news release from BAFRA says it has conducted a thorough investigation of Chinese made milk based food products sold in Bhutan following the news.
A few products like chocolate, sweets, cakes and milk tablets which contain milk as one of the ingredients were found in the market. The news release says the ban should be observed till further investigation is conducted including laboratory analysis.
