December 11: Ganey village under Kanglung Geog in Trashigang has been provided with safe drinking water. The village has four households and it is one of the most remote villages in the geog.
The safe drinking water supply was initiated by the faculty members of the Department of Geography and Planning of Sherubtse College. It was carried out with funds from Bhutan Water Partnership Secretariat of the RSPN.
For years, the small village of Ganey did not have proper drinking water supply. The village is located almost one and half hour’s walk from Kanglung proper.
The four households have been using unsafe drinking water from open sources. These sources are often used by animals. The Department of Geography and Planning of Sherubtse College came to their rescue. The water supply scheme was provided as part of a project assignment.
Jigme Nidup, one of the coordinators said they hope to create awareness on conservation of water sources and proper management through such projects.
24 third year geography students were also involved in the project. Sangay Dorji, a lecturer from the department of geography and planning said the project was carried out for the first time by the college.
The project was carried out with funds from the Bhutan Water Partnership Secretariat of the RSPN at a cost of Nu. 100,000.
The Kanglung Gup Ugyen Dorji said with Ganey village almost 95% of villagers in Kanglung gewog now have access to safe drinking water.
The finished works were handed over to the geog administration on Tuesday, December 9.
Ganey village also received electricity last month.
