October 05: The women and youth department of the People’s Democratic Party organized a discussion on the role of women as Bhutan embraces democracy.
More than 500 women from Thimphu attended the day long forum at the Kelki Higher Secondary School’s auditorium.
The forum was organized to provide an opportunity to brainstorm on women’s perspective, issues, concerns and interests as Bhutan embraces democracy.
Many of the participants applauded the women and youth department. They said it will give them a platform and give them a voice.
The women and youth department was formed to empower women and youth and enable them to participate in the democratic process.
The head of PDP’s women and youth department, Lily Wangchuk, said women’s participation will ensure that policies are not only responsive to the needs of women but also that of children and families. She said the department will look at social issues like child and family care, health and nutrition and violence against children.
It will also address issues like rape, prostitution, education, HIV/Aids and substance abuse. The department will be holding nationwide consultations with women.
This is expected to help the party formulate policies that will reflect the needs and concerns of women, men, children and families.
