Rising global food and oil prices dominate SAARC Summit

The 15th SAARC Summit ended signing four agreements and the adoption of the Colombo Statement on Food Security. At the two day summit, the heads of states expressed grave concern over escalating global food and oil prices.

The second and last day of the 15th SAARC Summit started early with the heads of state taking a retreat.

The 15th SAARC Summit ended with the signing four agreements. These include the agreement on the Charter on SAARC Development Fund, the agreement on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters, the agreement on establishment of regional standards organization and the protocol on the accession of Afghanistan to SAFTA.

The summit also adopted the Colombo Statement on Food Security after the heads of states expressed grave concern over the escalating food and oil prices.

It also adopted the 15th SAARC Summit declaration.

On Saturday, the SAARC head of states called for collective and concerted efforts to fight terrorism. The heads of state also called for measures to deal with the rising cost of energy and ensure food security in the region.

The need to enhance trade among the SAARC countries was also discussed at the two day summit.

Security was tight at the two day summit though the LTTE had declared a ceasefire during the SAARC summit.

Over 20,000 policemen were deployed in the city to ensure the safety of the delegates and ensure that nothing untoward would disturb the proceedings of the summit.

Bhutan's Prime Minister Lyonchen Jigmi Y. Thinley, President Mahinda Rajapaksa of Sri Lanka, Nepal's Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, the Chief Advisor of Bangladesh Fakhruddin Ahmed, Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai, Pakistan Prime Minister Makhdoom Yosuf Raza Gilani and Maldivian President Maumoom Abdul Gayoom participated in the Summit.

The next summit will be held in the Maldives.

On the sidelines of the SAARC Summit, the Prime Minister Lyonchen Jigmi Y. Thinley met with the Prime Minister of Nepal Girja Prasad Koirala and the Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh.

The Prime Minister also met with President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan and the Chief Advisor of Bangladesh Fakhruddin Ahmed.

The last day of the 15th SAARC Summit started early with the heads of states taking a retreat after a series of discussions on Saturday.

On Saturday, the SAARC leaders highlighted the need for collective efforts to combat terrorism, rising food and fuel price and ensure energy and food security and enhance trade in the region.
