Prime Minister launches project aimed at private sector development
October 02: The Prime Minister Lyonpo Kinzang launched the private sector development project and the second phase of the Rural Access Project in the capital yesterday.

The two projects are aimed at promoting private sector development, enhancing rural income and creating employment opportunities.

The private sector development project has three components. These are the promotion of IT sector, development of IT skills and strengthening of the financial sector with the help of IT.

Speaking at the launch, the Prime Minister Lyonpo Kinzang said Bhutan’s socio economic development is constrained by communication problems posed by the rough terrain. The five-year project with an investment of eight million dollars is funded by the World Bank.

Also present at the function was the Communications minister Lyonpo Leki Dorji. The government, he said, is looking towards the private sector to generate the much needed job opportunities.

The second project will focus on construction of roads in remote communities. The director of the Department of Roads, Phuntsho Wangdi said the current phase will cover villages under Pemagatshel, Wangdiphodrang and Dagana Dzongkhags.

Ms. Isabel Chatterton, a World Bank official said in many parts of the world access to roads distinguishes the have from the have-not.

The project is funded by the World Bank. About 3500 houses in the rural communities were connected with road communications under the first phase.
