Parliamentarians express their gratitude to India

The Parliament resumed yesterday after the weekend recess with the members expressing gratitude to the people and government of India for their continued assistance to Bhutan.

Members said the Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh’s visit was significant for many reasons. They said his visit came at a time when Bhutan is preparing to celebrate the 100 years of monarchy, the coronation of His Majesty the King and has just ushered in parliamentary democracy.

The Opposition Leader Tshering Tobgay said Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh is the first world leader to visit Bhutan after the country became a democratic constitutional monarchy. He said the visit is an indication of the regard the world has for His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo.

The members said the Indian Prime Minister’s visit not only reflects the growing bilateral relations but also the importance that the Indian government accords to Bhutan-India relationship.

The Works and Human Settlement Minister Lyonpo Yeshey Zimba expressed gratitude to Their Majesties the Kings for establishing close friendship with India. He said with Dr. Manmohan Singh announcing that the bilateral economic engagement over the next five years will be around Rs. 100 billion, they are confident of the success of the 10th five year plan.

The Education Minister Lyonpo Thakur Singh Powdyel said concerted efforts should be made to strengthen and take forward the unique, close and warm relationship that India and Bhutan enjoy.

The Drakteng-Langthel constituency member Rinchen Dorji said Bhutan-India relationship has contributed immensely to the prosperity of the country and happiness of the people.

The Dremitse-Ngatshang constituency candidate Ugyen Wangdi expressed gratitude to the people and government of India for the support they have pledged for the 10th five year plan. He also thanked the Indian government for lifting the ban on rice export to Bhutan.

Members prayed for the growth of Bhutan-India relationship and pledged to take further the Bhutan-India relationship.
