PM meets Bhutanese students in Colombo, Sri Lanka

August 4:
On the sidelines of the bilateral meetings, the Prime Minister Lyonchen Jigmi Y. Thinley and the delegation met with Bhutanese medical students studying in Sri Lanka.

As the delegates arrived at the gathering, they were greeted with familiar manners of bows and smiles. It was the Bhutanese students welcoming the Prime Minister and the Bhutanese delegation comprising of the Foreign Minister Lyonpo Ugyen Tshering, the Foreign Secretary Yeshey Dorji and the Ambassador of Bhutan to Sri Lanka, Tshering Dorji.

There are about 64 Bhutanese students studying medicine in Sri Lanka. Meeting with the students on Friday evening, Prime Minister Lyonchen Jigmi Y. Thinley promised to raise their stipend. He said while he cannot specify the amount, the government will discuss and address the issue.

A student representative said it is becoming difficult for them to live with the current stipend of US $ 375 per month since they have to manage the housing, food and transportation from the same amount.

A student representative also congratulated the Prime Minister for the successful elections and on Bhutan's smooth transition to parliamentary democracy.

The students said although they have been away from home, they have kept abreast with the changes and happenings in Bhutan. Following the meeting, the Prime Minister and the delegation joined the students for a tea session.
