News of third party generates mixed reactions
September 17: The news of the emergence of a third political party on the fast evolving political scenario has generated mixed reactions from the people.

Some have welcomed the news saying that it will provide more choice to the people. Others have said it will help make multi party democracy a reality.

It will also mean that Bhutan will have both the primary and the general elections. In the absence of a third party, there were speculations that the primary election may not be necessary.

Many others have however expressed doubts about the viability of the third party. They said there isn’t enough time for the third party to establish it to contest the 2008 election seriously.

Some have pointed out that it doesn’t have credible leaders and will not be able to get enough candidates.

In an interview with the BBS the Chief Election Commissioner Dasho Kuenzang Wangdi welcomed the formation of the third party. He said it will give the people more choice and the opportunity to participate in the democratic process meaningfully.

But he said looking at the developments, he is not hopeful that the party will be able to contribute in a meaningful way.
