National Strategic Plan for prevention and control of STI and HIV/AIDS

May 5: The government has endorsed the National Strategic Plan for prevention and control of Sexually Transmitted Infections and HIV/AIDS. The plan was presented by the Ministry of Health to the cabinet on April 29.

A press release from the Health Ministry says HIV/AIDS presents a significant development challenge to the nation. It says while the number of Bhutanese detected with HIV still remains low, the potential for a widespread epidemic remains a threat. It says concerted efforts involving multiple sectors and stakeholders are important to fight HIV/AIDS.

The Ministry of Health says the Royal Decree on HIV/AIDS issued by His Majesty the Fourth King in 2004 serves as the guiding principle in the fight against the disease. The Royal Decree calls for all members of society to help prevent HIV/AIDS and provide care and compassion to those affected.

The strategy which focuses on prevention of HIV also highlights the importance of providing for the health care needs of people living with HIV/AIDS. It says the government is committed to providing anti-retroviral treatment to people with HIV.
