January 23: Her Majesty the Queen Mother Ashi Sangay Choden Wangchuck launched the National Strategic Plan for Prevention and Control of Sexually Transmitted Infections and HIV/ AIDS in the capital today.
Speaking at the launch, the Health Minister Lyonpo Zanglay Dukpa said HIV/AIDS is not only a health concern but also a social and economic concern.
A presentation by the Officiating Director of Public Health revealed that the maximum cases of HIV were in Thimphu, Chhukha, Samdrupjongkhar and Pemagatshel.
Dr. Gempo Dorji said the number of HIV positive could be more than the current 160 as many cases go undetected.
The National Strategic Plan is a guide to respond to the epidemic collectively and collaboratively. It defines clearly the roles and responsibilities of all partners including non-government and community based organizations.
The plan also identifies the importance of providing health care to people living with HIV/AIDS.
Also present at the launch were cabinet ministers, parliamentarians, senior government officials and international representatives.
