November 3: National Council election in Dzongkhags with one or no candidates has been postponed by one month. In these dzongkhags, the last date for nominating candidates is January 1, 2008. The poll day is scheduled for January 29.

The Election Commission says voters should get the opportunity to choose a candidate of their preference.

Such a choice, it says, can be best made only if there are at least two candidates.

It says with a single candidate, if it appears that victory for the candidate is a foregone conclusion, most voters would feel that they have not been given fair opportunity.

The Election Commission says people may even decide not to show up for the election.

The Election Commission is also urging candidates to come forward to contest the National Council election.
