NA members discuss Waste Prevention and Management Bill
December 25: The National Assembly today deliberated on the Waste Prevention and Management Bill of Bhutan. With 11 chapters, the Bill outlines principles applicable to waste prevention and management and requirement for categories of waste. It also lists the responsibilities and authority of the National Environment Commission and powers and duties of implementing agencies.
The Works and Human Settlement Minister Lyonpo Yeshey Zimba said it is a very good to start discussions with deliberations on Waste Prevention and Management Bill since waste management is a serious concern. He said waste problem is posing a threat to Bhutan’s pristine environment.
He said the government has plans to deal with waste using modern means and technologies. Lyonpo Yeshey Zimba also said concerted effort from every individual is necessary and for that it is important to educate the people. He said cooperation of different ministries and agencies is necessary to combat the problem. Except for minor changes, the houses decided to keep the bill as it is.
