NA discusses concerns related to mining operations in the country

January 1: The National Assembly discussed on the audit report submitted by the Public Accounts Committee. According to the audit report on mining operation, there is lack of transparency while leasing out mines.

The report also says Talc mining is being continued despite concerns that the mineral is on the verge of exhaustion.

The report also highlighted damages caused to the environment, private properties, community and roads through reckless mining.

The Economic Affairs Minister said a committee has been formed to review applications to start a mining business. Lyonpo Khandu Wangchuk said leasing mines through open bidding is not appropriate. He said it only helps the well established business houses.

The Minister also clarified that Talc reserve is not on the verge of exhaustion. He said mining officials have discovered fresh Talc deposits in new locations in the country.

Lyonpo also said it is the policy of the Ministry to explore minerals for economic development with minimum impact to the environment. He said mining activities in the country will be strictly monitored and are in accordance with the Mining Act.

The Khamdang-Ramjar member said there is a need to review the coal mining in Dewathang Rishor, in Samdrupjongkhar. He said the coal mine is affecting some 20 households living above the mine. The Economic Affairs Minister said the Ministry will look into the matter.

Parliamentarians also submitted the need to assess the impact of stone and sand quarries. They said blasting in the quarry site is affecting the communities living nearby.

Lyonpo Khandu Wangchuk said currently the sand and stone quarries are leased out by the Department of Forest. He said the mines on the other hand are leased out by the Department of Geology and Mines.

The government is working towards a body which will monitor all mining activities in the country.
