NA discusses concerns on wild animals destroying crops, construction of farm roads and boundary talks

December 30: The morning session was dedicated to question and answer on various issues and concerns. Member of Parliament from Goenkhatoe-Laya constituency raised questions on government plans and strategies to prevent wild animals encroaching into agriculture fields. Damchoe Dorji said the concern was raised even at the last session.
He said the government has not been able to come up with concrete measures and solution, while farmers suffer. He said one of the major concerns raised by people in his constituency is the destruction of crops by wild animals.
The Goenkhatoe-Laya Member of Parliament said this is a common problem faced by farmers across the country.
He said the almost 75 percent of the population is dependent of agriculture and farmers’ spend sleepless nights guarding their crops against wild animals.
The Member of Parliament from Gelephu constituency supported the argument.
The Agriculture Minister said this is priority concern for the Ministry of Agriculture. Lyonpo Dr. Pema Gyamtsho said preventive measures are being implemented and compensation schemes worked out. He said compensation is now being paid directly to affected farmers.
He added the Ministry is also looking for funds to put in place effective measures. The Minister also said that it is important to work with conservation agencies and the nature conservation act.
The Member of Parliament from Drujeygang-Tseza constituency asked on the status of farm road construction. The Agriculture Minister said this should be reflected in the Gewog plans. He added that farm roads are a priority for the Agriculture Ministry.
Members also raised issues on compensation for land acquired for farm road construction. The Agriculture Minister said this will have to be in line with the rules and regulations of the National Land Commission.
The Bji-Katsho-Uesu, Member of Parliament sought clarification on the issue of border talks. He said this is a concern for the people. The Foreign Minister Lyonpo Ugyen Tshering said talks so far have progressed well. He said the talks will resume soon.
