Motorists raise concerns over road dividers

June 7: The roads in the capital town have become wider but it has given rise to new problems.

The road stretching from the Memorial Chorten to Chubachu along the swimming pool has also attracted its share of criticism. Motorists said the road dividers, the line of huge concrete blocks, are ugly. They say it could also result in accidents.

The road is wide and most motorists drive at break neck speed along this stretch of road despite police personnel stationed at strategic locations.

The wide road is divided by a long line of concrete blocks. In between the line of concrete blocks, gaps have been created by lifting off a block, so that pedestrians can cross unobstructed. This, motorists say could result in accidents. Out of these gaps, small children, no taller than the concrete blocks, can appear out of no where on to the path of speeding vehicles.

The concrete block has been lifted and placed on top of another literally hiding a child who trying to cross the road. The child also cannot see the speeding car. Drivers said authorities should come up with solutions before somebody is run over.

Motorists also try and cut in the wrong direction at the junction near the JICA office and the gap in the roadblock near the swimming pool whenever the police are not looking.

Road users said traffic jams are also seen during rush hours at the junction near the UNICEF office.
