October 11: Lunana gewog in Gasa, located at an altitude of more than 4000 meters is one of the remotest places in the kingdom. It is cut off from the rest of the country for about six months by snowfall every year. But the gewog can now communicate with the rest of the kingdom even when it is cut off by snow.
This has been made possible with Bhutan Telecom giving two satellite phones to the gewog early this month.
The people will be charged Nu. eight per minute for outgoing calls. The Bhutan Telecom says the rate has been subsidized.
It would actually cost the person about Nu. 50 per minute.
The gewog administrative officer Sherub Chophel said this will help to implement the developmental activities in the gewog on time.
