November 12: The five day Hindu festival of diwali or the festival of light concludes with Bai Tika yesterday. Diwali marks the homecoming of King Rama of Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh with his wife Sita and brother Lakshaman after a 14 year exile in the forest.
When he returned, the people welcomed him back by lighting rows of lamps or deepa-wali. In Bhutan, the day is observed by lhotshampas and Indian workers.
Diwali is observed by worshipping the goddess of wealth by performing puja, lighting lamps and decorating the house.
The lighting of lamps signifies the uplifting of spiritual darkness and victory of good over evil.
On the fourth day, male members get together and go door to door singing deosuray wishing the family members health and happiness. In return, they are given money and refreshment.
The last day is observed as Bhai Tika. On this day girls and women give Tika and garland of flowers to their brothers.
The festival is a celebration of life and an occasion to strengthen family and social relationships.
