Launch of broadband service postponed

February 1: Bhutan Telecom has postponed the launch of its DSL based broadband services after a major cut in the submarine cable in the Mediterranean Sea near Egypt.

Bhutan Telecom says the cut in the submarine cable has affected its Internet service. Bhutan Telecom was scheduled to launch its DSL based broadband service today in six locations in the kingdom; proper Thimphu, Phuentsholing, Paro, Wangdue, Trongsa and Kanglung.

Bhutan Telecom says the recently commissioned international Fiber link extending from Phuentsholing to London via Mumbai has also affected Internet services in almost one-third of the world.

Bhutan Telecom has a back up satellite service, which is enabling users to browse the worldwide web but at a slower speed.

Bhutan Telecom says broadband service will be available once the submarine cable cut in the Mediterranean Sea is repaired.
