Jaundice in new born babies on the rise- JDWNRH

February 3: The Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital (JDWNRH) in Thimphu is seeing an increasing number of jaundice cases in new born babies. 390 babies were admitted to the neonatal ward for jaundice last year compared to around 270 cases in 2008. The increase according to medical records is because of the increase in the birth rate.

Jaundice or yellowing of the skin and eyes, is the most common cause of admission of newborn babies to the neonatal ward.

People also believe that exposing babies’ body to the sun will help get rid of jaundice. For some this has worked.

But this practice is not advisable.

Although jaundice is common among babies most cases according to health records are not severe.

Mothers are advised to bring their babies to the hospital as soon as it develops yellowish skin. Exclusive breastfeeding is also necessary to prevent jaundice.
