Indo-Bhutan border to be sealed for elections

March 18: The border along Bhutan and the Indian state of Assam will be sealed from 6pm on March 23 till 6am on March 25. The Bhutan-West Bengal border will be sealed from 8pm on March 22 till 6am on March 25.

A release from the Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs says the border is being sealed to ensure safety and security during the National Assembly elections. It says all travelers required to transit through Assam must reach their respective destinations in Bhutan before 6pm on March 23.

Those travelling through West Bengal must reach their destination in Bhutan before 8pm on March 22. Return journeys through Assam as well as West Bengal will be permitted only after 6am on March 25.

The Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs also cautions the public to avoid traveling through Assam in view of the curfew that is being imposed from time to time under the Bodo Territorial Council area, particularly in Kokrajhar and Chirang districts of Assam.

Travelers are requested to travel through the lateral route.
