December 15: A team from India’s prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) is expected to visit shortly to look at the establishment of a medical college in Thimphu.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital Complex yesterday, the Indian Ambassador said the medical college, attached to the Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital would enhance its contribution and value.
Mr. Sudhir Vyas said in the 10th plan, India is looking at increasing the post graduate as well as graduate seats in some of India’s finest medical colleges and post graduate institutes.
He added that in this academic year itself, India has increased the number of seats for the MBBS course at AIIMS.
Ambassador Sudhir Vyas said that India will continue the emphasis on the heath sector in the 10th plan with the construction of the Gelephu Regional Hospital, reconstruction of Samtse Hospital and the construction of a Public Health Laboratory in Thimphu.
