Monsoon woes


July 19: (UPDATE) The onset of Monsoon brings joys to the people as it provides relief from the scorching summer heat. It shows hope for the farmers as they believe that it would usher good harvest, But the case is little different for the residents of Gelephu, in Sarpang Dzongkhag. The torrential rainfall for the past three days in Gelephu and Sarpang has left a trail of destruction. Roads and bridges have been damaged and people have lost their belongings.

Our correspondent in Gelephu Pema Samdrup says, residents had to spend a sleepless night yesterday.

More than hundred people, mostly school going children and vehicles travelling to various destinations are stranded in Gelephu. The buses plying from Gelephu to various destinations are being stopped.

The continuous rainfall for the last three days has created havoc swamping offices and residential houses.

In Gelephu, about a hundred metre brick wall between Bhutan-India borders collapsed last night.

The regional immigration office, regional revenue and customs office and the office of the Royal Bhutan Police at the border gate are flooded with rain water. Most of the equipment are submerged under the water.

The National Park office was also flooded last night and claims to have lost about Nu. 400,000 worth of office equipment.

The belongings of RBP families living at border gate were damaged after it was submerged under the water and debris.

About 7 blockages have been reported between Sarpang and Gelephu highway due to the swollen Paita-khola stream. The bridge near Kami-khola has also been damaged.

Our reporter says that schools under Sarpang Dzongkhag remained closed today following continues rainfall in the region.

Meanwhile, the Dzongkhag and Dungkhag officials are visiting the affected areas.
