September 16: The main streets in the main city core area will be closed to traffic during the Coronation and Centenary celebrations. During this time, the Road Safety and Transport Authority along with the Bhutan Post and the traffic officials will be providing free public transport services.
Movement of vehicles other than public transport buses into the core city areas of Norzim Lam and Chang Lam will be frozen during the celebrations. Shuttle bus services will be provided free of cost from identified locations to ferry the people during the event.
The six pick up centers have been identified as one in Motithang, Zilukha, near Druk School, one at the taxi parking, Changjiji and one near the national Assembly Hall.
The Deputy Chief Transport Engineer, Phurba Tamang said the step is being taken to avoid traffic congestion. He said 12 Japanese coaster buses are also being imported in addition to the existing city buses.
This makes the total number of buses to 43.
The Deputy Chief Transport Engineer said on the first day of the celebration, public transport buses plying to and from other Dzongkhags will also be free.
