Four men sentenced to prison for selling government land
September 19: In Gelephu, four men, a former Drangpoen, a former clerk in the Dungkhag court, a former survey official and a former Gup have been given sentences ranging from five to nine years imprisonment.

They have been found guilty of official misconduct, criminal conspiracy, forgery and betraying the trust of the government.

According to our correspondent Sonam Rinchen, about 15 years ago, the four men, who were then in service, connived together and sold about 40 acres of government land to innocent buyers.

The land has been confiscated from the buyers. The Gelephu Dungkhag court passed the verdict yesterday.

Tshigayla, the former court clerk received a nine years six months prison sentence. The survey official, Khandalal, was sentenced to eight years in prison. The former Gelephu Gup, Tiwari, received six years, ten months. And the fourth men, the former Drangpoen Thinley Wangdi, got five years imprisonment.

Apart from the prison sentence, they are also required to pay back the money they have acquired through the sale of the land to the buyers.

The Gelephu Drangpoen said if they fail to pay the money within six months from the day the judgment was passed, the properties registered in their name will be confiscated and auctioned off to recover the money and pay the buyers. een receiving calls from several interested individuals.
