Forest fire brought under control

March 11: (UPDATE) The forest fire which started from Chenari, Trashigang on Tuesday has been finally brought under control. It reached as far as Thongzur in Kanglung Geog.

More than 100 volunteers comprising of villagers, armed forced personnel, students and civil servants fought the fire in different locations.

The fire, which started in Dremetse in Monggar almost at the same time, is also controlled. People from the neighbouring villages, fearing that the fire might spread over to their villages, help control the fire.

Meanwhile, the forest fire below Udzorong is still raging on. Forestry officials told BBS that the firefighters were able control the fire earlier this afternoon but due to fierce wind the fire started all over again. The Trashigang Divisional Forest Officer said that they will, hopefully, be able to control the fire by tomorrow morning.

All the neighbouring villages have been alerted.

Forest officials are still in the process of calculating the extent of damage.
