Flash flood in Haa washes away cattle


July 19:
A flash flood last night in Chenpa village under Bji geog in Haa have washed away seven cattle, three grinding mills, a prayer wheel and two local wooden bridges. However there were no casualties or injuries.

The flash flood occurred at around 11 pm on Thursday night.

Chenpa village is located about four kilometers from Haa Damthang.

The Haa Dzongda Pemba told BBS that the cause of the flood cannot be ascertained at the moment. He said the Dzongkhag officials rushed to the site immediately after they were informed about the disaster.

The flood has affected three households and a shop in the village. One of the houses belongs to Ap Tsagay. He said his house has been flooded by sand, debris, and driftwood making it impossible for him to enter his house.

He was in the town when the flood hit the village. Only his mother in-law and his grandmother were at home at the time of the incident.

His 65-year-old mother heard the flood coming. She carried the 95-year-old grandmother to a safe place and came back to rescue the cattle but by the time she came back, the flood had washed away the cattle along with the cow shed.

The flood has also damaged grains and washed away about five truck loads of timber. Currently the affected families are living wit their neighbours.
