July 16: Five people including a two-year-old girl died when the Toyota Prado they were traveling in was swept away by a massive landslide near Takti on the Thimphu-Phuentsholing highway. The accident occurred at around 5:00 pm, about six kilometers from Takti canteen in Chhukha towards Thimphu on Monday, July 14.
There were six people in the vehicle. Four of the deceased were related. They include the driver, his wife, their two-year-old daughter, and his sister-in-law. They were on their way to Thimphu from Phuentsholing.
Only one passenger, an expatriate who was working as a finance officer for the Druk Ferro Alloys Limited, survived the accident. He is being treated at the Tsimalakha hospital.
The massive landside triggered by monsoon rain came down from above the road and swept away the Prado which fell 150 feet below the road. The vehicle was damaged beyond repair.
