Election officials in Monggar brief voters on their rights and responsibilities

October 14: While the majority of the electorate seems to know how to vote using the Electronic Voting Machine, they are none too familiar with the nuances of politics. To clarify their doubts Dzongkhag Election officials in Monggar met with the people of Drepong, Monggar and Ngatshang gewogs recently.

During the briefings, the election officials explained the rights and responsibilities of the people highlighting the importance of electing capable competent leaders.

Election officials told the people that the right to vote and elect the government is a gift from His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo.

They said the people should attend the meeting of all the political parties before deciding who they should vote for.

The Election officials explained that party workers are not allowed to force, threaten, or bribe the people to vote for them or fill party registration forms.

The people were also informed of a recent incident in Kengkhar gewog. When members of a particular party arrived in the village on familiarization tour, some of the villagers reportedly refused to provide shelter because they have already pledged their support to the other party.

The Election officials asked the people to extend their support to all the parties. When it comes to voting though, they should vote for the party and candidate of their choice, the Election officials said.

More than 1,200 people from Drepong, Monggar and Ngatshang gewogs attended the meeting.
