Efforts to prevent flashflood in Trashiyangtse

July 8:
In Trashiyangtse, efforts are being made to prevent flashfloods in Bumdeling area. A team of Dzongkhag officials led by the Dzongda recently visited the Baraykang area to assess the situation.

The team of Dzongkhag officials who visited the Baraykang area recently said the situation has improved over the years. According to the Forest Extension Officer Yeshey Peldon this was due to the tree plantation carried out in the area.

The Tashiyangtse Dzongda told BBS that a report will be submitted to the Ministries of Home and Cultural Affairs and Agriculture.

The Dzongkhag is presently exploring funds to start the prevention works in the flash flood prone Baraykang area.

In the past flash floods along Baraykang Chu and Kholong Chu has flooded several acres of agricultural land and washed away livestock. Terraced paddy fields were either washed away or filled with debris and sometimes buried under heaps of sand. Flash floods also washed away power tiller tracks.

The Dzongkhag Environmental officer says Bumdeling being a flat land, the river changes course every year. She said the land can be reclaimed by removing sand and debris and building retention walls.

Baraykang is located north of Tashiyangtse. It is a two day walk from the nearest road head in Bumdeling.
