May 8: To address the acute teacher shortage, the Education Ministry will be recruiting 222 additional graduates as temporary teachers, reinstate retired teachers who possess the capacity and capability to function efficiently on contract basis, and accept more UN volunteers in teaching.

A news release from the Cabinet Secretariat says deeply concerned about the shortage of teachers amidst prevailing perception of the decline in the quality of education, the Lhengye Zhungtshog discussed the issue at length. It says the proposals on incentives for teachers will be looked at holistically by the pay commission.

The Cabinet also considered the need to revise the stipends for temporary teachers in recognition of their service and motivate them to work harder. It says the Education Ministry and the RCSC will be looking into it and submit a joint recommendation to the Cabinet for approval.
