Dzongkha Linux stall fails to attract visitors

November 18:
The Department of Information Technology (DIT) of the Ministry of Information and Communications (MoIC) is organizing an awareness campaign about Dzongkha Linux at the ongoing ICT fair at the CICCC ground in Thimphu.

The visitors to the DIT stall at the CICCC ground in Thimphu are mostly students. They are here to browse the internet or play computer games at the Educational Games section since it can be availed free of cost.

At one corner a crowd gathers around the computer where photo editing and printing is done. This also comes free of cost. But the computer where visitors can learn about Dzongkha Linux has remained untouched. Not many seem to be interested to try and use this particular computer to write emails or chat in the national language which the Dzongkha Linux operating system is capable of like Microsoft word.

Pema Choejey who works with the Department of Information Technology is hopeful; that in the next five to 10 years, many will start using Dzongkha Linux.

Dzongkha Linux was launched in 2006. According to DIT, users are allowed to modify, improve, customize and distribute.

The DIT stall also provides information on E- governance, Agriculture marketing, Bhutan Portal and the coronation and centenary websites.

The ICT fair at the CICCC ground concludes on November 19.
