July 14: Doctor Tobgyal School (DTS) bagged the 2008 Coronation Silver Jubilee Shield of the Coronation Archery tournament.
DTS defeated Talo Nobgang in the 3rd and the deciding game at the Changlimithang archery range played over past two days.
Aiming to hit the bull’s eye, the archers of Talo Nubgang and Doctor Tobgyal team put in their best to make the finale an electrifying one.
However, after two long days of strive, Doctor Tobgyel’s School or DTS was awarded the Coronation Shield and a cash prize of Nu. 45,000. The runners-up, Talo Nobgang received a Shield and cash prize of Nu. 30,000.
The Shield and individual prizes were awarded by the Health Minister, Lyonpo Zangley Dukpa.
In the individual category, Tshering Gyaltshen of DTS was declared the Man of the Match. He hit 21 Kareys in 30 rounds. He was awarded a cash prize of Nu. 7,000.
Ugyen Thinley of Choley Namgyal was named the Best Archer. He received a cash prize of Nu. 10,000.
The prize for highest Dobji was taken by Tshering Nidup of Drukpol. He was given cash prize of Nu. 7,000.
The prize for one day highest Karey was bagged by Karma Dorji of BBS. He received Nu. 3000.
The best dancer’s prize of Nu. 3000 was awarded to Drukpol. The prizes were sponsored by the royal government.
Meanwhile hundreds of spectators watched the match with excitement and enthusiasm. They said there is much of culture and tradition clubbed in the traditional game.
The Coronation Archery tournament began on June 2 with 36 teams from different parts of the country. Two teams from Sikkim in India also participated in the tournament.
The Coronation Archery Tournament was first held in 1999.
