May 3: The much awaited Dungsam Cement Project in Nanglam under Pemagatshel is at last taking shape. Although the project was conceived in the early 1980s, actual work started only in October 2007 due to security reasons. The construction works are in full swing.

Having completed the pre-project construction works like road widening, construction of bridges and ground development works, the actual machinery plant building started only on 9th September last year.

The factory will start producing the cement by November 2011. The Managing Director of the Dungsam Cement Corporation Limited, Dorji Norbu, said construction works are within the schedule.

Although in the initial stage, the project has already started benefiting the people in the region. After the completion of the project it, will not only generate employment but once the Nanglam-Gyelposhing highway is complete, Nanglam will also serve as the major stopover for the people travelling to India.

Once complete the project will produce about 1 million tones of cement per annum. 90 percent of the cement will be exported to India.
