October 13: A conjunctivitis outbreak has also been reported in Samtse. According to hospital officials, on an average they are treating more than 60 cases a day. Of that, 50% are students.
It is the second dzongkhag to report a conjunctivitis outbreak. Earlier this week, a conjunctivitis outbreak was reported in Samdrupjongkhar.
Since then, the outbreak has reportedly become more severe and many more have been infected.
Also known as red eye, there are two types of conjunctivitis- infectious and non-infectious.
The Assistant Ophthalmologist at the Samtse general hospital Pema Lhendup said the cases reported in Samtse are the infectious type.
It is characterized by swelling of eyelid and discharge from the eyes. He said the outbreak might be due to the hot and dry weather in the area.
He said if proper care is not taken, conjunctivitis can even lead to blindness. People with the infectious conjunctivitis must use hot water to clean their eyes.
Those with the non-infectious type, characterized by itchiness and watery eyes should use cold water. Doctors say it is important to maintain hygiene.
