Carelessness: Leading cause of road accidents

April 7: Carelessness is one of the main causes of road accidents in Bhutan. In 2006, there were around 940 accidents claiming the lives of 71 people. Of the total, more than half were attributed to carelessness.

This was revealed at a daylong refresher course on road safety and traffic discipline held in Gelephu on Saturday, April 5.

Most accidents can be avoided if the drivers are careful. According to the Road Safety and Transport Authority (RSTA) most of the accidents are caused by carelessness.

The RSTA office in Gelephu conducted a refresher course for drivers to educate them on safe driving practices and road rules.

Prem Adhikari, the Regional Transport Officer told the gathering that carelessness, road condition, and mechanical failure are the main causes of accidents in Bhutan. He urged the drivers to adhere to the prescribed speed limits.

Some of the participants said the course was helpful. They said the course also helped them understand traffic rules and how to use the roundabouts.

As of 2007, there are close to 36,000 registered vehicles in Bhutan. Our reporter Sonam Rinchen says the RSTA regional office in Gelephu is also carrying out awareness programs for students.

The refresher course was organized by the RSTA office in Gelephu.
