Cabinet decides to establish medical college

May 8: The Cabinet has decided to establish a medical college within the next two years to address the shortage of medical professionals and staff hospitals with adequate medical doctors and health workers.

It has also directed the Health Ministry to implement several measures including the reinstatement of retired doctors who possess the capacity and capability to function efficiently on contract basis.

The Health Ministry will also continue to recruit medical specialists from Myanmar and explore the feasibility of recruiting medical specialists from other countries in the region. It will also continue accepting health volunteers from overseas in orthopedics and encourage similar volunteers in other fields.

The other measures include encouraging volunteer doctors from India and doctors who are about to retire to practice in Bhutan and graduates from recognized medical institutes and institutes where Bhutanese doctors undergo training such as in Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, and Bangladesh to conduct their internships in Bhutan.
