Bhutanese textiles intricate, original and distinct but expensive

June 6:
Experts presented a comparative analysis of Bhutanese weaving tradition with weaving techniques in Laos on Wednesday, June 4.

It was aimed at identifying bottlenecks and recommendations for making Bhutanese hand-woven textile not only affordable but also competitive in the global textile market.

Bhutanese hand woven textile is known for the intricate designs, originality, and distinctiveness. But experts say Bhutanese hand woven textile is comparatively expensive making them less competitive in the international markets.

For the past two months, Joseph Lo, the culture and development coordinator of UNDP and Kongthong, a master weaver from the Phaeng Mai Gallery in Laos conducted a detailed study on the production techniques and cost of Bhutanese hand woven textile in comparison with weaving techniques in Laos.

Joseph Lo said the cost of production is higher in Bhutan because most of the materials are imported. He said silk is 26% more expensive in Bhutan than in Laos. He said weavers in Bhutan use back strap looms, which are not productive, economical and cost effective.

Joseph Lo said the introduction of new technology will help increase the commercial production of hand woven textile. He said that it is important to establish weaving production centers.

Kongthong from Laos said both countries have similar designs but the techniques are different. She said weavers in Laos use hand looms. Bhutanese weavers use back strap loom.

The comparative analysis was initiated by UNDP, the handicraft association of Bhutan and Pheang Mai Gallery in Laos. Around 17 weavers attended the presentation.
