Bhutan phases out 75% ODS
September 20:  The National Environment Commission says Bhutan has been able to phase out 75% of ozone depleting substances.

This is the target set by the Montreal Protocol on substance that depletes the ozone layer.

The Montreal Protocol is an international treaty designed to protect the ozone layer by phasing out the production of a number of substances believed to be responsible for ozone depletion.

The ozone layer absorbs the harmful ultraviolet rays produced by the sun.

The Director of the National Environment Commission, Sonam Yangley said Bhutan has been able to meet the target because the kingdom’s consumption of ozone depleting substance is less.

Industries that use cold storage refrigeration are the major consumers.

According to the Protocol, member countries have to completely phase out ozone depleting substance by 2010. He says Bhutan can achieve the target.

Meanwhile the Deputy Minister of Environment, Dasho Nado Rinchen is attending the meeting of parties of the Montreal Protocol on substance that depletes the ozone layer in Montreal, Canada.
