May 12: The Bazam or the cantilever bridge over Mochu in Punakha has been inaugurated.
The reconstruction of the cantilever bridge over Puna Mochhu was carried out after the original bridge was washed away by a flood in 1960.
The 55 meters Bazam was re-built with financial assistance from the German government. The Pro Bhutan Association in Germany initiated the restoration and reconstruction works.
The Nu. 36 million bridge was inaugurated on Saturday by the Prime Minister Jigmi Y. Thinley and the Executive Chairman of Pro Bhutan Association, Harald Nestroy.
Inaugurating the Bazam, Lyoenchen Jigmi Y. Thinley said the present bridge blends modern technology and traditional architecture. He said the Bazam remained in ruins due to lack of expertise and appropriate technology.
The Executive Chairman of the Association, Harald Nestroy said the reconstruction has further strengthened relations between the two countries. The Executive Chairman said the completion of the bridge also commemorates the centenary celebrations and the coronation of the 5th King.
Reconstruction of the cantilever bridge began in October last year. It was designed by a renowned Germany, engineering company specializing in designing bridges.
The Bazam is a prototype of a hybrid construction, using traditional design and modern technology. Invisible steel elements have also been incorporated to prevent the bridge from twisting and falling sideways.
Until the new bridge was built people were using a suspension bridge to cross the river.
Senior government officials, members of parliament and the local community attended the ceremony. |
