Accident cases almost doubles in Thimphu

December 15: The number of motor vehicle accidents in the country are on the rise. In Thimphu, the figure has almost doubled according to records maintained by the traffic police.

The Thimphu traffic police recorded 478 accidents last year. The figure increased to over 800 this year.

The traffic division said the increase is because of lack of parking space and proper road conditions.

Majority of accidents are caused by human errors. This includes rash and negligent driving, over speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to the traffic police, hit and run cases have also increased. Last year there were 67 hit and run cases. This year the figure has jumped to over 90.

Meanwhile the traffic police are carrying out extensive patrolling within the town and the highways.

The division is also coming up with plans to create awareness on traffic rules and regulation. This winter, in collaboration with the Bhutan Olympic Committee and the Youth Development Fund, the Division has plans to conduct Traffic Safety Discipline education with the youth.

Over 43,000 vehicles have been registered in Thimphu alone. That is an increase of 3,000 vehicles from the previous year.
